A T-Visa mental health evaluation is a clinical assessment for a survivor of a severe form of human trafficking applying for T nonimmigrant status on Form I-914. It documents trauma-related symptoms and can support the trauma exception to law enforcement cooperation and the extreme hardship element. Amrinderjit Singh, LCSW provides these evaluations by telehealth in 9 states.

Where clinical evidence fits in a T-Visa case

T nonimmigrant status protects survivors of sex trafficking and labor trafficking — including debt bondage, document confiscation, and work obtained through force, fraud, or coercion. A mental health evaluation can speak to several parts of the case:

  • Trauma exception. Applicants generally must comply with reasonable requests from law enforcement, but those unable to cooperate because of physical or psychological trauma may be exempt. The evaluation documents the trauma and how it limits the survivor's ability to participate.
  • Extreme hardship involving unusual and severe harm upon removal. The report can address the survivor's treatment needs, risk of re-traumatization, and the effect of returning to the place where exploitation began.
  • The trafficking experience itself. A clinical account of coercion, fear, and control helps adjudicators understand why the survivor did not leave or seek help sooner.

What the report covers

  • A trauma-informed interview about recruitment, exploitation, and escape, paced to the survivor.
  • Validated screening for trauma-related, depressive, and anxiety symptoms.
  • Functional impact, safety concerns, and treatment recommendations.
  • DSM-5-TR diagnoses where clinically supported.

Language and trust

Trafficking survivors often distrust anyone connected to their journey, including community interpreters. Interviews in Punjabi and Hindi are conducted directly by Amrinderjit Singh, LCSW with no third party present. Urdu and Spanish interviews use a qualified interpreter.

Available in 9 states

Evaluations are conducted by secure telehealth for clients physically located in any of these states at the time of the session:

Frequently asked questions

Are labor trafficking survivors eligible for a T-Visa evaluation?

Yes. T-Visa protection covers labor trafficking — forced labor, debt bondage, and involuntary servitude — as well as sex trafficking. The evaluation is the same in structure for both.

What is the trauma exception?

T-Visa applicants generally must comply with reasonable requests for assistance from law enforcement. Applicants who cannot do so because of physical or psychological trauma may be exempt. A clinical evaluation is common evidence for that exception.

How long is the interview?

Usually 60 to 90 minutes over secure video. The survivor can take breaks, and the session can be split if needed.
